Falyn Has Fifth Disease

While giving Falyn a bad this evening, I realized that the rash she has is Fifth Disease. I had Fifth Disease four years ago and will never forget the experience. When adults get it they suffer from swollen joints with lots of pain making it very hard to move at all. It lasted for weeks and is the worst I have ever felt in my entire life. When kids get it, they barely realize they are sick. With kids, it starts with a red cheeks that last a few days. They then get a rash on their torso and arms. It goes away after about a week. (All the other kids had it four years ago when I got sick.)

Falyn didn’t have a fever or act at all sick. I thought that her cheeks had been sunburned while were at White Sands and didn’t think much else about it. She started getting a rash a few days ago that I attributed to the dry air in El Paso and her sensitive skin. There is no mistaking the rash now for anything but Fifth Disease. Now that it has spread over her chest, back and arm I know exactly what it is. She said that the rash doesn’t itch and now that she has a rash she isn’t contagious. I’m sure the rash will go away in a few days. I’m glad she got it now as a child and doesn’t have to worry about every having it as an adult.

Headed Home

We had a great time in El Paso, but the kids have school on Monday, so we have to get back home. We left at 8:30 pm and drove all night. Arriving back home at 8:00 am the next morning. We only made three brief stops, so made great time. It took only 12 1/2 hours to get home versus the 14 hours it took to get there. We were all sad to leave, but happy to arrive back home.

Western Playland

We had so much fun at Western Playland today. The kids loved all the rides. Falyn was too short to go on most of the rides, but had fun in the kiddie ride section. The boys enjoyed the Tsunami ride which dumped a bunch of water on you and helped you cool off on what was a very hot day. All the kids but Falyn went on the big roller-coaster and loved it. Here’s some pictures of the fun.

Franklin Mountains State Park

Today we went for a nature walk in the Franklin Mountains State Park, visited the El Paso Museum of Archeology and had lunch in the State Park. The park was so pretty! There were tons of wild flowers. The kids enjoyed learning about the life of the Indians that lived in the El Paso area thousands of years ago.

Hanging Out In El Paso

We spent most of the day just hanging out at my parents house today. However, we did take the kids to see “How To Train Your Dragon” in 3D this afternoon. It was a cute movie and all the kids liked it.

The kids have been enjoying playing in my parent’s backyard. The have been playing ping-pong.

And basketball.

They have also enjoyed the swing and hammock.

And playing with my parent’s dog, Tika.

Talia had to do a project for school, which turned out really cute.

Here’s some more pictures taken at my parent’s house.

White Sands National Monument

We had so much fun at White Sands National Monument today. It was super windy, but that didn’t keep everyone from having a blast. The sand dunes were so much fun to play on. Dan bought a sled at the gift shop and we all had fun sliding down the dunes on it. The kids also enjoyed rolling and jumping down the dunes. I took a ton of pictures. Here’s some of my favorites.

The boys and Falyn got their Junior Ranger Badges.

El Paso Zoo

We spent the day at the El Paso Zoo. The kids enjoyed seeing all the animals there.

We had a close call when Aidan got a bit to close to the tiger.

He was lucky to escape with his head still attached! We had better luck with the elephants. This one was nice enough to let all the kids ride on him.

My favorite animal there was the ocelot. Isn’t it just adorable?

This orangutan had a blast playing with a box. He was so much fun to watch.

They have several sea lions and the kids loved watching them.

We got to watch a training session with Sunny.

Here’s some more pictures from our fun day at the zoo.

Driving to El Paso

We left at 3 am this morning on our trip to El Paso to visit my parents. We stopped a total of four times and got there 14 hours later, just in time for dinner. The kids did really well on the trip. The boys had one set of DVD players and the girls had another one. They were all able to watch movies and play on their DS’s, which kept them mostly happy on the long drive.

Easter Evening

We spent Easter evening at Dan’s parent’s house. They had an egg hunt for the kids, which netted them way too much candy. We all enjoyed a great meal together after the egg hunt.
